Postdoctoral Fellow Position in Mathematics

Northwestern University’s School of Education and Social Policy is seeking a postdoctoral trainee to participate in an innovative study of districts’ efforts to create greater alignment in preschool through grade 3 mathematics. The multi-level, longitudinal study investigates the relationship between district policy efforts and students’ experiences, learning opportunities, and mathematics learning.

The study is being carried out under the auspices of the Development and Research in Early Mathematics Education (DREME) Network, an interdisciplinary network of scholars dedicated to conducting innovative research and development on early childhood mathematics funded by the Heising-Simons Foundation.

The preK – 3 alignment study is a collaboration of scholars from Northwestern University, UCLA, University of Denver, Stanford University, and Vanderbilt University. The postdoctoral trainee will work most closely with Cynthia Coburn (Northwestern University) and Megan Franke (UCLA).

The position begins ASAP, but July 1, 2019 at the latest. It has the possibility of extension for an additional year.

They seek applicants with:

  • Strong training in qualitative research methods,
  • Experience collecting data at the school and classroom level,
  • Expertise in teacher policy and/or teacher professional development in mathematics at either the preK or elementary level.

Knowledge of mathematics teaching and learning, dual language learning, relationship between policy and practice, and/or quantitative/mixed methods is a huge plus, as is the ability to speak Spanish.

The postdoctoral trainee will participate in all phases of the project including: developing/revising instruments; data collection; data analysis, providing feedback to district and school partners, and the publication of results.

The principal investigator will encourage the postdoctoral trainee to develop publications that build on their emerging research agenda.

The postdoctoral trainee must be able and willing to travel to research sites; work both individually and as part of a multi-campus team; and provide supervision to undergraduate and graduate research assistants.

Qualifications

Applicants should have an earned doctorate in education, public policy, mathematics education or related field. The position carries a competitive salary plus health insurance coverage and has the possibility of renewal, conditional upon performance and available funding. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
